"“What you don’t feel, you will not grasp by art, unless it wells forth from your soul and sways the heart.” Here is the essence of the problem with AI, it does not feel, it does not err, and it does not possess the very thing that makes human intelligence uniquely human."

This for me hits the nail on the head. Our feeling nature is what keeps most decent humans from self destructive behaviors. I also believe that feelings help us to tap into that which is the Divine, because it taps into our intuitive faculties, that Zen-point where the river flows free. AI, like most tech-driven innovations including the internet in general and VR, keep us locked in a mental prison, void of feelings. If being sentient is the ability to experience feelings, then humans will become less and less sentient as tech becomes more and more prominent.

In a world of public-private partnerships, I'm not sure there is anyone to depend on except ourselves individually for the decisions we make to use the technology. Government controls don't feel any more reliable to me than leaving the ethical decisions in the hands of the scientists and engineers developing the technology.

I suspect, as with all technologies, we'll have many horrific situations and only through those, will we sort out where controls are best placed and who should be accountable. In the end, we the consumer of products will determine through our engagement and thoughtful embracing of technology will determine the future. Those who build and distribute ethically will become the known leaders while the rest will fall away. From a universal perspective humanity will have advanced, just as it did in the past. But that doesn't mean there won't be individuals who suffer tremendously on that journey of learning.

We have always had technologies that could take us out and we've come close more than once in the story of humanity - but we always seem to survive. I don't expect this time to be different. After all, we could still end humanity with technology we consider old - today we're as close to nuclear armageddon as we've been since it was invented. Yes, we must all be cognizant of the "new fire" we are playing with, but not one of us can abdicate responsibility for the outcome of our personal and collective actions. The government and the companies are only held accountable when we the people take responsibility.
